Hilary Duff attempted a comeback last year, but it didn’t go far. Songs like “Chasing the Sun” and “All About You” just weren’t the monumental hits the singer needed to get fans excited for a comeback album. Duff wasn’t alone in this, however. Gwen Stefani and Fergie’s comeback efforts both had similar fates.
Duff isn’t done trying, though. With the help of pop songwriter Tove Lo, the singer has made a solid attempt at radio gold. Her latest release, “Sparks,” features a whistle refrain similar to Flo Rida’s “Whistle” and a melody that would’ve fit right in on Lo’s Queen of the Clouds debut album. It has all of the markings for a pop hit, but that may be the problem. It feels a little too manufactured at times.
That won’t stop it from getting stuck in your head, though.
Give it a listen and share your thoughts below. Continue reading
Hilary Duff goes on a scavengar hunt of sorts to find her crush in the video for her folk-leaning single “All About You.” The singer spots a guy in a restaurant, and after texting his picture to all of her friends, she picks up a record that he left behind and sets out on a mission to find him.
In between there’s scenes of Duff line dancing with her girls.
In the end, she gets the guy and he’s not even weirded out by the fact that she’s spent all day trying to find him to “return” a record he left behind.
“All About You” is a proper comeback single (I like to pretend “Chasing the Sun” never happened) for Duff who was planning to release her new album in October, but has since pushed it back a couple of months. No official release date has been revealed. Continue reading
THIS is much better, Hilary. How about we just ignore that first single, “Chasing The Sun,” and act like it never happened? You know, start fresh.
After releasing a snoozy comeback single, Hilary Duff very quickly realized that fans and critics were extremely underwhelmed and moved on to the next single from her forthcoming album.
“All About You” is the folk-leaning pop song we were expecting based on Duff’s recent comments about her new music. The rollicking chant-worthy production is sure to pick up steam much faster than the initial offering.
“Think you’re all about me, but I’m all about you. Turn the lights down, let me show you it’s true,” Duff sings during the melodic hook.
This is a pop comeback done right. Continue reading
Hilary Duff’s comeback has been a long time coming and I think it’s safe to say many people have been waiting to hear if the former Disney star could deliver. Today her new single arrived a day earlier than it’s scheduled release date.
“Chasing the Sun” can be summed up up in four words: “Colbie Caillat co-wrote it.” And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the breezy carefree single definitely doesn’t jump out at you right away.
The guitar-driven single is the type of song you’d listen to on the way to the beach with friends. It’ll put you in a good mood and make you appreciate life, but it’s not necessarily memorable. “On my pursuit of happiness, I realize that more means less, If I got love then I am blessed,” Duff sings happily.
If you were expecting something more dramatic (perhaps a “Come Clean” follow up?), you shouldn’t have. Duff seems to be enjoying this stage of her life and this single reflects that.
This is as good a time as any to note that Duff’s camp turned down Charli XCX’s hit “Boom Clap,” which is steady climbing up the Billboard Hot 100.
Duff’s says her new album will have a “folkier” sound.
Update: The music video for the new single was released this morning. Duff spends most of the visuals daydreaming about being at the beach with a shirtless man, even to the point of drinking her coffee from a margarita glass while at her boring office job. (Sidenote: I don’t know an office job that lets employees keep pet hamsters at their desk…) Continue reading
