What would you do to join a sorority if it’s emeritus members included T-Boz, Kimbra, Monica and other electrifying singers?

The ladies appear briefly in the video for Janelle Monae’s latest single “Electric Lady,” which the singer released this morning. The video centers around a house party thrown by Monae’s character and her sorority sisters. The Electro Phi Beta ladies dance and mingle with guests (including T.I.) before Monae ushers in a marching band.

The video does not feature Solange, who appears on The Electric Lady title track alongside Monae.

Still, the festivities are pretty fun to watch! Continue reading

Jill Scott, Tessanne, Melissa Ethridge, Patti Labelle, Janelle Monae and Ariana Grande perform at White House: Women of Soul

President Obama may have flubbed the spelling of “respect” during the White House’s Women of Soul event last night, but that doesn’t mean he and the First Lady don’t have a deep appreciation for soulful divas! Jill Scott, Tessanne, Melissa Ethridge, Patti Labelle, Janelle Monae and Ariana Grande all performed in front of the First Family during the event, both as solo artists and collaboratively.

If you don’t start shouting the minute mama Labelle or Franklin’s feet touch the stage, you’re going about this viewing experience all wrong. Newcomers Monae and Grande even hold their own, performing their own material and popular covers.

Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House will air on PBS on April 7. Until then, watch a few of the performances, including “Lady Marmalade,” “I Never Loved A Man  (The Way I Love You),” “Tightrope,” a cover of “I Have Nothing” and a group performance of “Proud Mary” below. Jennifer Hudson performs on BET Honors

Jennifer Hudson performs on BET Honors

Last night’s BET Honors honored Nelson Mandela, Aretha Franklin, Berry Gordy and other African-American trailblazers.

Tamar Braxton was on hand to honor Berry Gordy by singing a few Diana Ross songs, while Janelle Monae performed a cover of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” (the cover is also featured on the Target edition of Monae’s The Electric Lady). The highlight of the night, however, was when Jennifer Hudson took the stage to honor Aretha Franklin by singing popular songs like “Respect” and “I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Love You).” I would advise against watching this performance at work. Shouting may ensue.

Mariah Carey also performed last night, wearing a sexy black gown and showing up Braxton’s revealing dress as she sang her latest single “You’re Mine (Eternal)” while sitting on top of a piano.

Watch the performances from this year’s show below and share your thoughts! Continue reading

Janelle Monae and Pharrell pose after performing separately at the NBA All-Star game

Janelle Monae, Earth, Wind & Fire, and more hit the stage for the NBA All-Star halftime show, following an explosive performance from Pharrell and company during the game’s player introductions.

The 12-minute set started off with Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Dr. John and Gary Clark Jr. and ended with Monae performing “Electric Lady” before bringing Earth, Wind & Fire on stage to perform “Shining Star.”

It was pretty electric!

Sidenote: I imagine my aunt will be calling me after she sees this. She always tells me I should post about artists people “actually know and care about” and I have a feeling Earth, Wind & Fire will fit nicely into that category. Continue reading

Happy Valentine’s Day! Over the past few days I’ve released love-themed playlists in anticipation for this holiday and it’s finally here! Today’s playlist is simple: it’s all about soulful slow-grooves from artists like Janelle Monae, Sam Smith and Tamia.

Yesterday’s playlist was for those people that have done crazy things for love and Wednesday’s was for the sappy hip-hop enthusiast!

I’m a sucker for a good love song, so I had a blast making these playlists! I hope you enjoy listening to them alone, with your family, friends or significant other! Continue reading
