Jason Derulo performs “The Other Side” on Dancing with the Stars

Jason Derulo’s electronic ode to Jordin Sparks (“The Other Side“) has really grown on me since it was released a few weeks ago and last night’s performance only made me like it more. The pop star, who broke his neck and wore a brace for most of 2012, spent much of his performance on Dancing with the Stars standing on top of his head and doing acrobatic moves with his background dancers. Clearly this guy is fearless or crazy…I’m not sure which one. The crowd really seemed to enjoy the risky performance, though, as did I.

Derulo is preparing to release his third studio album this September.

Jason Derulo in “The Other Side” video

When Jason Derulo released his latest single “The Other Side,” I said I could grow to love the song if he delivered a sickening video. He did. The concept is nothing new, but Derulo tells the story of getting drunk and sleeping with a best friend using fast-paced montages and extreme dancing (the singer, who broke his neck not too long ago even stands on his head!!!). The song is based on Derulo’s relationship with Jordin Sparks, but if things went down like THIS Ms. Sparks has surely grown up!! Continue reading

Most girls have a hard time getting their boyfriends to say their name in public, but Jordin Sparks’ boyfriend, Jason Derulo, wrote an entire song about her!

“Sparks fly like the Fourth of July/Just take me to the other side/I see that sexy look and I know we ain’t friends anymore/If we walk down this road we’ll be lovers fa sho.”

It’s not Derulo’s best single and, honestly, I don’t think it’ll be huge (unless he releases a really good, buzz-worthy video), but it’s a cute dance song that fans of Sparks and Derulo will surely gravitate too. Continue reading

Well, well, well. Jason Derulo’s been pretty low-key, resting up after a neck injury, this year so when I heard that he had a new song I was pretty excited to hear it. Then I saw the title…

Jason Derulo isn’t known for having vulgar music, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. “F**k Somebody” is another dance track about wanting to have sex with someone. It has some catchy chanting, and a repetitive chorus, “I want to f**k somebody. Somebody like you,” but I don’t see it making it to radio. I’m sure they’ll change the vulgar lyrics to “love” if it does, and I think that video could be really cute…but that’s about it.

Earlier this week Jason Derulo made his first appearance since having his neckbrace removed and tonight he took to the American Idol stage to perform his new song “Undefeated.” The song was a part of a Coca-Cola/American Idol Contest where viewers could help write the lyrics. I don’t LOVE the song or this performance, but it works. Continue reading

Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks seem to be taking a page from Chris Brown and Rihanna (except they’re still together). The new couple recorded a remix to Derulo’s hit single “It Girl” and released it with candid footage of them spending time together and smooching it up! Too cute!!! Check out the song and video below!! Continue reading

OUCH! Jason posted this picture on his Facebook with the following caption:

I fractured my neck doing tumbling & acrobatics 4 tour! Always tryin 2 push boundaries 4 YOU! Like my new chain? ;)

I hope he has a speedy recovery!! According to MTV he narrowly escaped being paralyzed from the accident! Check out the official statement released through his label below!! Continue reading

If you read my album review for Jason Derulo’s sophomore album Future History then you know that history is one of my favorite songs from that project. Jason released a video for this song and he is dancing his butt off! I love it! And from the looks of things Pick Up The Pieces, my other favorite song, is getting the single treatment soon.

S/o to ThatGoodHit for posting this!

Most of us came to know of Jason Derulo in 2009 when he released his debut single “Watcha Say.” I remember hearing the song for the first time on the radio and thinking “who is this kid, and how dare he have the audacity to turn an Imogen Heap song into such a catchy pop song,” (I heard the acoustic version and was even more blown away.) Derulo released another song or two from his self titled, debut album, but none were as catchy as “Watcha Say” so I honestly never bothered listening to the rest of the album.

When the music video for “Don’t Wanna Go Home” premiered earlier this year, I found myself in love, yet again, with Derulo and his clever use of samples. It was at that moment that I decided that I would give his sophomore album, Future History, a shot.

I initially intended to do my usual track by track review of the album, but after typing up about 5 song reviews I decided that may not be the best way to go. Unfortunately I found myself writing the same thing for every song, “catchy, but typical.” Jason failed to step outside the box and try anything new throughout this album, and it ultimately fell pretty flay. The two lead tracks are basically what the entire album sounds like….repetitive chorus’, sampled tracks, and a veryyy addictive beat. Album Highlights would definitely be the albums two lead tracks, (“Don’t Want To Go Home,” and “It Girl”) “Pick Up The Pieces,” “Fight For You,” and my absolute favorite “Breathing.” I found myself listening to tracks like “X’,” where Derulo sings about still being in love with his ex (although I would argue that it was lust, not love) and getting pretty bored. A lot of the tracks were just simply, forgettable, not because they were completely horrible, but because they all at some point began to sound the same.

Vocal Delivery: 3.5/5
Lyrical Content: 2/5
Production: 3.5/5

Overall, I can appreciate Jason Derulo’s attempt at a dance-pop album, but would suggest that next time he experiment with a few new sounds and step outside of his comfort zone so that fans don’t become too bogged down by the same ol’ sound. I genuinely hope that his next album incorporates a lot of his favorite styles from his debut and sophomore album, but also a lot of different styles as well.

Have you heard Future History? What did you think?!

Jason Derulo has released the music video for his second single It Girl off of his upcoming album Future History (set to be released in September). Jason is continuing to prove to people that he’s going to have a spot in the music industry for a while! This song and video are quite catchy (and they bring out my inner sap) and as usual features Jason doing his signature moves.

This guy has really grown on me! What do you guys think?
