It’s been three years since American Idol alumni Kris Allen released his debut album in 2009 and now the pop star is ready to return to the industry once again. His sophomore album Thank You Camellia was released earlier this week, but is only set to sell about 15k copies in it’s first week. I thoroughly enjoyed Kris’ first album and was eager to give this new project a try after seeing him live. Is Thank You Camellia severely under-promoted and underrated or just a bad album?!
Vocal Delivery: 3/5
Lyrical Content: 2.5/5
Overall Production: 2.5/5
Better With You – Thank You Camellia starts off with the infectious “Better With You.” The track opens with the sound of Kris entering a room, fitting for album opener, then Kris begins to play and sing to the object of his affection about how she makes everything better. 3/5
The Vision of Love – “The Vision Of Love” is the first single from the album, and after hearing the rest of the album I can see why. This song is fun, positive, and a great re-introduction of Kris. 3/5
My Weakness – This is the song that immediately stuck out from the rest of the album and will probably be one of my summer favorites. “My Weakness” comes with a beat, and a whistle that’s sure to get stuck in your head. It’s another love song, but with a fun twist that’s missing from a lot of the others. 3.5/5
Out Alive – “Honestly I’m better off lonely/Promises are just pretend,” Kris Allen sings over the hopeful guitar-driven track. I like this song, but it’s just not anything spectacular. 2.5/5
Monster – “Monster” has a sinister feel to it that is both hunting and alluring. Kris warns “Maybe I should wear a warning that says there is danger if you ever get too close to me.” over the dark beat. It’s a solid standout track, but it’s not great. 3/5
Blindfolded – “If I was blindfolded/If my memory was erased/If every sign pointed to another place/I’d still find you.” And all the sappy girls say “awwww” in unison. Same Kris Allen. Typical beat. Really cute song, but nothing out of the ordinary. 2.5/5
Teach Me How Love Goes – Kris Allen wants to learn how to love in “Teach Me How Love Goes.” “Because I forgot how she is pretty even when she has just woken up/And I forgot how we can’t make it through the evening without making love,” Kris sings over the acoustic track. It’s simple. It’s beautiful. It works. 3/5
Rooftops – Kris Allen shows off his rap flow once again in “Rooftops,” as he sings (once again) about being madly in love. I seriously love when he does that. It’s the cutest thing. It’s also nice to hear him switch it up every now and then. 2.5/5
Leave You Alone – “Leave You Alone” is a sweet ballad about a love that just won’t work. Kris keeps to his roots and delivers solid vocals over the guitar-driven beat. This song is so simple, and so completely heartbreaking at the same time. 3/5
Loves Me Not ft. Meiko – I adore both Meiko and Kris Allen so when Meiko tweeted about this collaboration I was pretty excited to see how it would turn out! It fell flat. The duo plays on the “she loves me/she loves me not” game. The problem is both of their voices are so similar that it’s completely boring. So disappointing. 2/5
You Got A Way – Kris Allen can’t resist his lover in the piano-driven “You Got A Way.” Kris sounds amazing on this nostalgic track, and I could definitely see it becoming one of my favorites. 3.5/5
