Muse’s, The 2nd Law is the British band’s newest studio album since 2009′s The Resistance. “Supremacy” kicks the album off with a cinematic rock opera sound which leads into the techno ballad “Madness”.  ”Follow Me” is an upbeat song in the same vein.

“Explorers” is the anthem for lonely hearts everywhere, a dreary and weary track with perfect vocals from Matthew Bellamy. “Big Freeze” is more standard alt-rock but it’s no cookie-cutter track. It features unexpected instrumental turns that convey the speaker’s emotions about not giving up.

After all the progressive styles, the alt-rock returns with “Liquid State”. The album closes with “The 2nd Law: Unsustainable” which picks up the cinematic music that “Supremacy” had then launches into a dupstep instrumental backing. “Isolated System” is essentially the same song, but slowed to a dramatic techno beat.

The 2nd Law is sophisticated music that transcends boundaries without going overboard. The album sticks with progressive rock to  getting more and more advanced with every track. Each song is unpredictable both individually and following one another. Perfect for a listener who wants something new and widely varied.
